Frequently Asked Questions
- I'VE NEVER BEEN FISHING BEFORE - I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! Westport Charterboat captains and crew are well-trained in helping both the experienced and the novice alike. We'll go over how to cast, how deep to fish, what to do when you get a bite, and how to land your ocean-caught fish. It's our pleasure to make your day as rewarding an experience as possible.
- WHAT DO I WEAR? It might be hot in the city, but a breeze off the ocean can be chilly. Dress in layers - from tank tops and t-shirts, to sweatshirts and hoodies. Bring rain warm (you can always peel it off!). Wear rubber-soled shoes or boots and a windbreaker. All charter services sell light rain gear at modest prices.
- WHAT ABOUT LUNCH? Bring one! Small coolers are welcome on board. Local restaurants and our local grocery store, Shop 'n Kart, has lunch options for charterboat trips.
- WILL I NEED A LICENSE? Washington requires a license for most recreational fishing. Folks who fish a lot usually purchase a season license every Spring at their neighborhood sporting goods store. All local charter offices sell short term licenses. The cost is about $8-9 for 2 consecutive days of fishing. Dept of Fish & Wildlife have online licenses and permits, as well.
- WHAT DO I DO WITH MY CATCH? Your catch will be cleaned or filleted at sea (depending on the regs per fishery). As you leave the boat, the crew will call our your preassigned number and hand you your bag of fish. We use heavy-duty fish bags that will get your catch home. You may purchase a bag of ice from the charter office, or other local businesses. You're also welcome to have our deckhands fillet your salmon at a small fee once we get to the dock. Marino's Seafood has many options to fillet, steak, can or vacuum-pack your catch. They also offer storage for those fishing multiple days.
- WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO FISHING? The short answer is, "When They're Biting!" We never know when that is. The best thing to do is to schedule your trip around your schedule and hope for the best! Weekends are the most crowded so if you can fish during the week, all the better. If you are limited to weekends, make sure to make your reservations well in advance and please...show up and be on time!
- WHO'S THE BEST BOAT TO GO WITH? Good question! We, of course, believe the Tequila Too and Crew are the Best. But, we have to admit, all of the boats within our Charterboat Association have many years of experience and are fantastic at what they do and love: namely, fishing. Most of us are owner/operators and have a lot of love, sweat, and tears in our boats, crew and equipment: our livelihoods depend it! We know that our reputations depend on you having a good time and passing the word on to your friends back home. Word-of-mouth is the best advertising we can ask for; so, ask a fishing friend to recommend someone. If you're in our area, and haven't selected a boat yet, wander down to the docks and wait for the boats to come in. Stand on the dock and watch the anglers as they wait for their fish. It's not hard to tell whether or not they had a good time. Catching fish, laughing, spending time with friends and family is what it's all about.
- WHAT DOES IT COST TO GO FISHING? Considering the high cost of a good vessel and its maintenance, charter fees are relatively low. They certainly haven't kept up with inflation over the years. Each charter service prices their trips a little differently so be sure to make sure what the price includes and if there are any "on-board" charges. And remember: the lowest price is not always the best price! Our booking agent, the New Deep Sea Sportfishing, has fair prices. Check it out!
- MARKING YOUR ROD HOLDER TO HOLD A PARTICULAR SPOT ON THE RAIL You may want to mark your favorite fishing spot on the boat, and that's fine; however, you are subject to the following conditions;
- Please ask permission and do not get aboard or mark spots when the rail gate is shut or crew are not present
- The crew knows where we'll be fishing - they have to make sure we set up for what's best for everyone
- People fishing for more than one day may already have claim to a spot whether it is marked yet or not
- We may ask you to move slightly to accommodate persons of disability or to keep families together
- IF I CATCH MY LIMIT EARLY, DO I HAVE TO STOP FISHING? No. We fish until the boat limits. For example, if we have 20 people, we need 40 salmon (2 per person). If you are lucky enough to land 5 fish, you keep 2, and the rest will go to other people. At the end of the day, you'll pick your two favorites and offer the remaining fish you caught to give to your party who didn't land one. It can all get messy if you start trying to assign fish here and there. We have a lot of experience and we do not have any need to take fish from our customers. So, trust us as we pass out the fish and we'll work with you and your group to make sure it all works out in the end.
